Equipment: Our coaches can provide advice when buying new or secondhand equipment when you are ready. Setting up from new can be done from about £100, but there are sometimes 'outgrown' bits and pieces available as someone trades up. As in most sports, top of the range bows can be bought at top of the range prices, but there is no need to spend more than you can afford. The 3 main types of bow are:
  • Long Bow
  • Recurve
  • and Compound
Long Bow:
The Long Bow is the traditional bow and is made in one piece. The Longbow is simple elegance.
Recurve:
The Recurve Bow is the bow used in the Olympics. The modern Recurve Bow comes apart, the limbs separating from the riser. The Recurve bow can be used barebow or Free-style. Barebow is as it sounds, just as it comes with no add-ons, Free-style means that sights, stabilisers, etc. can be added.
Compound:
The Compound Bow has a cam and cable system and remains permanently strung. The Compound bow when drawn goes through a peak weight then lets off; this means that the weight on the fingers at full draw is greatly reduced. The Compound bow is also a lot shorter than the Recurve or Longbow making it ideal for wheelchair archers.
